Pride at Birdland
I spent the evening of June 28th at Birdland shooting three shows...Nicholas Rodriguez, Tony Yazbeck with Clyde Alves and Melinda Sullivan, and "Love Me" with Molly Pope (not the official title, but she seemed to be the emcee. Really fantastic all around, here are a few highlights...
a space shuttle
I feel it needs a bit of explanation...
At Kennedy Space Center there's a fantastic reveal of Space Shuttle they have on display. Basically, you're put into one of those Disneyesque 180˚surround-cinemas, you're shown a brief and very loud film of a launch, and finally, as you float through space, a curtain rises and there's the shuttle. Caught this moment just as that was happening. I think it makes for a rather otherworldly photo.

This is from a set of production stills I did from the Ovation TV show "Art and the City" awhile back. He's standing behind a glass case which leads to the weird reflection/disappearance of his body. Nifty!
brian gallager's CD "All That's Ahead"
To celebrate the release of his new CD, Brian Gallager played at Birland the other night. He's got a great rock voice with just a touch theatre to it--a perfect combination. Plus, charm galore and his wife Megan Hilty singing backup.
waiting for the vet
One of the many photo blogs I follow is THTK, a collection of user-submitted photos "deemed by public participants as Too Hard to Keep." It's fascinating. One's mind just simply creates the story around the photograph, and it's simply heartbreaking to sift through, or, maybe I'm just a sucker with a runaway imagination, who knows? It got me wondering if I'd taken any photos I'd deem THTK, and I immediately thought of this morning. I'd submit this photo if the guidelines didn't stipulate that the photo must be deleted after its submission--I'm far too selfish to part with this one, no matter how painful.
This is Gilbert. This is his last morning. We were waiting for the vet to come and euthanize him because the tumor on his nose made it too hard for him to breathe. It sucked.
I've held on to this photo for years now, without revisiting it, without looking at it, without editing it. It's certainly more personal than most anything I post here, but it was a moment.
